Tanabata Star Festival

This social and cultural gathering brings to Hilo a tradition that began more than 2600 years ago in Japan. Tanabata is a celebration where children and adults make wishes for the next year. Wishes are written on tanzaku (colorful narrow strips of paper) then hung on bamboo trees.
The Tanabata Star Festival in its 6th year and is a cooperation between the Chamber and the Subaru-NAOJ Telescope Facility. Attendees enjoy Nagashi-Somen, sushi and entertainment while learning about Japanese culture and traditions.
