Traditional sumo is more than just a sport; it’s a living example of traditional Japanese culture. Sumo wrestling is a strict hierarchy based on sporting merit ranked according to a system that dates back hundreds of years to the Edo period. Matches were held to raise money to construct shrines and temples or to replace bridges.
